On the Dark Side

There are many travel photography situations when the light is very limited – dark interiors of historic buildings, subtle dusk scenes – where it would be good to get a shot. The ruggedly built Samsung EX1 we are trying out came into its own in these situations. Its super bright 1.8 lens (24 – 72 mm equivalent) lets you take low light shots at a fast enough speed and low enough ASA to get really usable results. Another thing I like about the 1.8 lens is the ability to take interesting, shallow depth of field close-ups.

The articulated screen also opened up lots of interesting camera angles, the above our heads crowd scene shot in the heaving night market in Budapest for one.
