#frifoto theme – Stone

Stack of Portland limestone

From St Paul’s Cathedral in London to the United Nations Building in New York  limestone from the Isle of Portland  has been used for many notable buildings.   The stone,  formed millions of years ago during the  Jurassic Age is prized for being readily worked and resistant to weathering.

Blocks of stone were lowered by cranes like these into waiting barges to be transported up the River Thames to London and further afield.  It must have been hard, hazardous work.  In the background you can see Weymouth Bay, this is where the sailing events at the 2012 Olympics will be held.
