#frifoto theme luxury – classic yachts

Bow J class Yacht

On discovering that this week’s theme for #FriFotos on Twitter was “luxury” the first thoughts that came to my mind were all to do with comfort – impossibly plump pillows, soft deep piled enveloping towels, the cool feel of fine cotton sheets.

As for luxury travel, well for me, it is epitomised by the grand cruise liners and great train journeys; journeys undertaken in style, where service and elegant surroundings are the accompaniment to stunning locations and changing scenery.

But also springing to mind were images of elegant sailing yachts, bows slicing through the water with gleaming varnish and mighty masts; rich men’s dreams like the J Class yachts built in the 1930′s to contest the America’s Cup.  So luxury: inessential but conducive to pleasure & comfort, sumptuous surroundings and something expensive beyond the means of most of us – by these definitions these exquisitely crafted sailing machines certainly qualify.

If you fancy sailing in style (taking an active or laid back role) read about Kairos, a modern take on the J-Class with 9 ensuite cabins.  She’s sailing in the Caribbean this winter and will be at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta
