The Canary Islands of La Gomera and Tenerife have been in the news lately battling forest fires. Visiting La Gomera last year I was enchanted by the rugged landscape (it can’t be an easy place to fight fires) and the wonderful flora. At the islands heart is an area of ancient laurel forest which dates from the Tertiary era millions of years ago. Our offerings for FriFotos this week are a tribute to the rich flora of La Gomera. Between them Frank and Daniela hosts at lakeside Quinta Do Barranco da Estrada in Portugal have created a floral paradise. Determinedly, lovingly Frank built a good bit of the property stone by stone – the garden came first. He showed us pictures of a bare hillside now transformed into a lush terraced garden filled with blooms and birds – Frank’s a birding guide. Inside the house Daniela’s signature vases of colourful, fresh flowers fill the rooms, by the bedside, on tables and sideboards, even in the bathroom. Do you like…

West Bay Harbour, Dorset England It’s strange, the number of people, when they learn I live just along the road from West Bay, turn out to have been on holiday here. They nearly always remember it fondly too. Crabbing, fishing, playing on the beach or strolling around the harbour – West Bay is a place for simple pleasures.
